Everything made relates to the change of a place. If you dig a hole, you build a mountain. Through field studies made in Cornwall, England, I have experienced how china clay mining shapes the local landscape. Waste material creates mountain peaks and obsolete quarries transform into lakes. By placing the tangible results of my craft in the recently disused quarry Sunds Grustag at Värmdö, I want to juxtapose ceramic practice and the mining industry to bring to mind the relationship between land use and material culture.
For the degree exhibition of 2017, Emma Friberg and Sara Söderberg present their individual MFA exam projects through a collaborative work based at the shared place – Sunds Grustag.

Under besök i Cornwalls kaolin industri i södra England har jag upplevt hur mineralbrytningen format landskapet. Restmaterial som läggs på hög bildar alptoppar och gamla dagbrott omvandlas till sjöar. Genom att placera resultatet av min konsthantverkliga praktik i det nyligen avvecklade Sunds Grustag på Värmdö vill jag juxtapositionera en keramisk praktik och industrin bakom mineralbrytning för att föra tankarna till förhållandet mellan land use och materiell kultur.
